Volunteer Assistant Therapist – Cognitive Rehabilitation and Independent Living Skills

  • Goal:
    • In group therapy led by SBI staff member (team leader) for cognitive rehabilitation and independent living skills, encourage and assist the clients to complete learning activities. The skills developed include reading, math, computer skills, and memory building.
  • Requirements:
    • Personable, English-speaking, associate diploma or above
    • Experience in education or rehabilitation preferred
    • 3 hours per week during Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm
  • Process:
    • After the team leader introduces the activity, the volunteer assistant sits next to clients to provide support and encouragement in order to engage in and complete the activity. The therapy is conducted in small groups, with no more than 5 to 8 clients per team. Activities typically shift on the half-hour, and all training materials are provided by SBI.
    • After attaining comfort/skills in working with clients, the volunteer assistant may begin to develop and introduce activities themselves with staff in attendance.
